Trauma-sensitive yoga was designed to help students heighten their body awareness. By creating a safe, secure environment, trauma-sensitive yoga helps participants notice what’s happening inside their bodies and to learn different ways to release tension, reduce and control fear and arousal, and tolerate sensation.

The practice is based on the growing understanding that trauma takes a heavy toll on the body and the brain. When the body absorbs and anticipates trauma, individuals are likely to experience hyper arousal, hyper vigilance, and may have a hard time calming themselves down.

Trauma-sensitive yoga helps participants calm their minds, regulate physical responses and in turn connect with their emotions. They're then able to learn to recognize and tolerate physical sensations and regain a feeling of safety inside their bodies.
